Regis to Honor Leaders with Honorary Degree, Civis Princeps Award

DENVER – Regis University will present one honorary degree and four Civis Princeps (First Citizen) awards, and more than 1,300 students will receive degrees during spring commencement ceremonies May 8-9 at the University’s north Denver (Lowell) campus.

The 1,316 graduating students will receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees during three ceremonies: at 9 a.m. May 8 for graduate and doctoral students; at 1 p.m. May 8 for College for Professional Studies undergraduate students; and at 10 a.m. May 9 for Regis College and Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions undergraduate students.

The honorary degree and/or Civis Princeps Award recipients are:

* Yohannes Gebregeorgis, founder of Ethiopia Reads, will receive an honorary degree at the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 9.  

* Charles Goldberg, senior partner with Rothgerber, Johnson & Lyons LLP, who serves as general counsel for the Archdiocese of Denver and general counsel for the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota, will receive the Civis Princeps at the 1 p.m. May 8 ceremony. 

* Edward A. Robinson, co-chief executive officer of Robinson’s Dairy, will receive the Civis Princeps at the 9 a.m., May 8 ceremony. 

* Richard L. Robinson, co-chief executive officer of Robinson’s Dairy and a Life Trustee at Regis University, will receive the Civis Princeps at the 9 a.m. May 8 ceremony.

* Michael J. McManus, outreach worker for Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, will receive the Civis Princeps at the 10 a.m. May 9 ceremony. 

The Civis Princeps award is the highest honor the University bestows. On rare occasions, the Regis University Board of Trustees authorizes the awarding of honorary degrees to individuals who have led lives of distinguished service and professional achievement. 

Father Michael Sheeran, S.J., president of Regis University, will give his charge to the graduating class speech as well as confer the degrees.

Among the graduating students are 80 Doctor of Physical Therapy graduates, 170 Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduates, and 161 Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates.
